How to read an evidence rating
Each research-observed effect on a profile is rated on the quantity, quality and consistency of published evidence. A rating describes the literature, not a recommendation.
- Extensive
- Multiple independent, well-designed studies, including human trials where they exist, consistently show the effect.
- Moderate
- Several studies document the effect, with limits such as small samples, animal-only data or no independent replication.
- Preliminary
- One to three studies, or mostly in vitro and animal data. Treat as exploratory.
- Limited
- Sparse or conflicting evidence. Mechanistic plausibility may exist but direct support is minimal.
